A Tale of Two Cities – Philly and DC
Hello Gentlemen –
Apparently, some things are just not meant to be… such as my trip to DC.
I had already booked my flight and made a few night’s reservations at an ultra awesome ultra modern hotel in Dupont Circle. I had already confirmed a party reservation and a few more intimate social engagements for my stay. Most importantly, I had already called ahead to the Freer Gallery of Art to arrange for the viewing of some mid 13th century Spanish portraits that I had read about… today I called to cancel that appointment 🙁
Why? Because on Monday, I did something unbelievably stupid, yet (in my opinion) totally understandable. The weather was far too gorgeous to sit inside, so I went with some friends to go check out our favorite diving spots up north a bit. Even though the water is amazingly cold, the sun was also amazingly hot, so guess which idiot could not resist the temptation to take the first dive of the season off of the Kancamagus? I’ll give you a hint – the same idiot who hit an underwater tree branch and sliced open her foot. Good thing I keep a suture kit in the trunk!
The cut certainly isn’t the prettiest thing to look at, but then again my foot wasn’t the prettiest thing about my body – I hope we can all agree on that! Anyway, it doesn’t look like there’s going to be any permanent damage beyond the cosmetic. I’m trying to be good and not stay on it too much (that’s the closest I’ll ever get to keeping off it, lol) , so a 10 hour stroll around the Smithsonian is definitely not a good idea right now, nor is the epic trek through most airports. Neither is going out for more hiking and diving… what a boring week! I wish I had some company to liven up this bedrest thing :/
Sorry, DC. It looks like I’m going to have to take *yet another* rain check!
Philly, on the other hand, is shaping up to be a fantastic trip 🙂 Even though I’m there half for business (I got suspected of naked video conferencing one too many times I suppose, and now they want to make me physically go into the office out there so that I have to get dressed), I’ve arranged ample free time for my pleasure, and would love to devote a few hours to your pleasure as well 🙂
It also looks like I’ll be there a little longer than I originally anticipated, so please take a look at the calendar – you’ll note that I’m now going to be in Philly until the 21st 🙂 I’m hoping that gives me enough time to make an appointment at the Museum to see some of the rarer Rodin statues, something which I was surprised to find that Philly has quite a lot of. I’ve had Rodin kicking around the back of my mind since I reread Stranger in a Strange Land a few months ago… I like Rodin. Yes, we’re all aware of The Thinker, but I’m more excited to see the beautiful female portrait that he created as The Thought, which is locked away in the basement of the museum. I’m not usually into sculpture at all, but Rodin’s work is all very vibrant, with a quick, purposeful grace that captivates so thoroughly that the details don’t matter.
Don’t worry, I’m not going to bore you with pictures of fine French sculpture and just leave you hanging without some porn 🙂
